What does NATURAL really mean?

Simple Definition of Natural

An internationally accepted definition of “natural” developed by the Natural Products Association (NPA) requires products to:

  • Be made with at least 95% all natural ingredients
AND
  • Contain only synthetic ingredients specifically allowed under the NPA standard
that  do not have suspected human health risks, and are nurturing to us and as
harmless as possible to the earth.

Specifically prohibited ingredients include, for example, parabens, sodium lauryl sulphate, and mineral oils.

huni Formulations At Least 99% Natural

The balance is small amounts (1% or less) of a safe-to-use synthetic preservative system, either containing sodium benzoate or phenoxyethanol.  Geogard Ultra®, the sodium benzoate based preservative system that we use in all of our products, apart from the Intensive Hydrating Mask, is accepted by ECOCERT for use in certified organic cosmetics.  This broad spectrum cosmetic preservative system is an active blend of gluconolactone and sodium benzoate that allows manufacturers to protect their formulations while avoiding the use of controversial preservatives.

When a preservative is not required to maintain the integrity of our formulations we naturally don't use one.  For example, our Anytime Lip Treatment is preservative free.

We use small amounts of sodium hydroxide in our products. This is used to pH balance our formulations. During the manufacturing process this ingredient separates into water and salt. While it is not a legal requirement to declare this ingredient, we include it in our ingredients listing as our guiding philosophy is honesty and transparency.

As natural and sustainable preservatives and pH balancers become available we will use them in our products.
